Why you might feel emotional after a Bowen session (and why that’s a good thing)
It’s something I hear often in the clinic:
“I don’t know why, but I felt teary after our session…”
Or
“I felt such a big emotional release—it came out of nowhere.”
And I always say—that’s okay. That’s your body doing what it needs to do.
Bowen therapy works on more than just the body.
Even though it looks gentle (and it is!), Bowen works deeply with the nervous system.
We’re not just releasing physical tension—we’re also giving your body space to process stored emotional stress. It’s like your body finally exhales, and with that exhale, sometimes emotion comes too.
That might look like:
A few tears
Feeling extra sensitive or tired
Unexpected memories popping up
A big feeling of calm or lightness afterwards
It’s all part of the healing.
When your nervous system moves out of “fight or flight” and into a state of rest, repair, and safety, it can let go of things it’s been holding onto.
This is why some people feel emotional, even if they weren’t expecting it. It’s the body releasing.
And often, on the other side of that release, there’s more ease. More space in the body. More clarity.
How to support yourself after a release:
💧 Drink lots of water – hydration helps the body flush and regulate.
🛏️ Rest if you need to – naps, early nights, or just quiet time.
🧘♀️ Gentle movement – a short walk or stretch can help the body settle.
📓 Journal it out – jotting down thoughts or feelings can help your mind catch up with your body.
You’re not “too emotional” you’re healing.
Your body knows what it’s doing. Bowen simply gives it the space to listen.
And if you’re ever unsure or want to talk through how you felt after a session, I’m always happy to chat.
This work is about more than just technique it’s about safety, presence, and nervous system care.
I’ll be back soon and can’t wait to support you again.
